Recommended Prerequisites

Italiano 2 or a elementary knowledge of Italian, corresponding to A2 level of Common European Framework fr Language.

Teaching Methods

Reading of literary texts and press articles, which will serve as the basis for specific exercises. Listening of dialogues, informative programs, literary texts and songs in the original language. Viewing of films and other audiovisual materials in the original language. Writing of letters, summaries, brief narratives of various types. Oral expositions on previously defined subjects; conversation; debate of cultural topics and study subjects.

Learning Outcomes

In this course, we will study the morphosyntactic structure of pronunciation, spelling and lexicon of the Italian Language, as well as cultural topics, at a level similar to level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. We will learn to use the lexicographical tools (monolingual and bilingual dictionaries) in a continuous manner, as well as the reference grammar. There will also be a working topic that will be developed throughout this course and which will serve as the basis for a final presentation. In the first semester, there will be two weekly classes of two hours each.

Syllabus

1. Pronunciation and spelling: Graphic and tonic accents; phrase accent and inflection; spelling of Italian velar & palatal sounds; syntactic duplication; simple vs. double consonants.

2. Morphosyntactic struct.: def. & indef. art.; adj (position, comparative and superlative); pers. pro. (stressed & unstressed); reflex, rel. poss., demonst., interr. & indef. pro. & adj.; phrasal preps.; conjug. (active and reflex forms) of regular and modal v.; conjug. of dare, fare, stare, andare, potere, sapere, bere, dire, venire in all tenses; adverbs of place, quantity and time; simple & complex sentences and clauses.

3. Lex. & culture: Italian cultural figures; traditions and customs; Italian cultural industry & production; Italian crime novel & minor literary genres; most important celebrations - cultural & anthropological origins; the 21st century family.Working topic: a portrait of Italy: a survey of the Italian society as shown by  modern popular music between 20th & 21st centuries.
