Recommended Prerequisites

Italiano 1 or a basic knowledge of Italian, corresponding to A1 level of Common European Framework fr Language.

Teaching Methods

Use of selected written and oral authentic texts : newspaper articles, creative texts (stories, poetry, comics), radio or television broadcasting, audiovisual works (music, clips, videos, film clips). Dictations, Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking exercises, guidelines for a proper use of the dictionary.

2 evaluation methods are used. Continuous assessment implies 75% attendance (10% of final grade), 2 tests (65%) and a work, oral presentation (15%), active participation in classes and performing ad hoc tasks (20%),. The final assessment consists of written & oral examination.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the semester, students will be able to have an elementary level in grammar structure according to a notional / structural method. They will develop skills in speaking, comprehension, and writing by introducing complex syntax. An overview of contemporary Italian societywill be considered.

Syllabus

1. Pronounciation and orthography. Contrastive phenomena.

2. Morpho-syntactic structures. Nominal inflexion; composition in morphology; negative prefixes; verbal inflexion  in indicative (present, passato prossimo, future tenses), participle, imperative; “si” impersonal passive; modal verbs; personal pronouns; possessives; indefinites pronouns and adjectives.

Phrasal structure: simple sentence; exclamative clause; 

Complex sentence: coordination in correlative, disjunctive clauses; subordination in  concessive, completive, relative, conditional and causative clauses.

3. Lexicon and culture. Communicative acts in family, at home, when speaking about time and weather, in free-time, doing shopping, in daily activities; Italian art towns.

4. Theme: The Italian capitals of province.
