Recommended Prerequisites

 This course is designed for absolute beginners, no previous knowledge of Italian is required. 

Teaching Methods

Use of selected written and oral authentic texts: newspaper articles, creative texts (stories, poetry, comics), radio or television broadcasting, audiovisual works (music, clips, videos, film clips). Dictations, Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking exercises, guidelines for a proper use of the dictionary.

Learning Outcomes

Acquisition of colloquial and lexical competences allowing  basic  interaction skills in personal, educational and public domains. Ability in performing elementary operations of analysis and transformation of linguistic structures at lexical and morpho-syntactic level. Introductory notions about Italian society and culture.

Syllabus

1. Pronunciation and orthography. Vowels and consonants; double consonants; interrogative, predicative and exclamative inflection.

2.Morpho-sinctactic structure. Nominal inflexion; gender and number in regular nouns,  qualifying adjectives, demonstrative  adjectives and pronouns; interrog. adjectives and pronouns; prepositions; personal pronouns – subject form; numerals; verb. inflexion (pr. tense and passato prossimo in the indicative mood, imperative and infinitive m., modal verbs); adv. of affirmation, adverbs of negation; adverbs of time, adverbs of place.  The simple sentence; the declarative  and the interrogative sentence introduced by pronouns and adjectives already known by students. The complex sentence: copulative and adversative coordination; subordination: causative, temporal and infinitive final clauses.

3. Lexicon and culture. Greetings;  personal information; free-time and social life, family, food and holidays in Italy.

4. Theme: Italy and Italians in the world
