Teaching Methods

Each theme and author will have an oral introduction made by the teacher. This will be followed by commentary, with the active participation of the students, of literary, historical and critical analysis texts directly related with the subject in question. Whenever possible and fitting, some excerpts will be presented using audiovisual means.

Learning Outcomes

This course aims to embark in the study of the most significant literary manifestations in Spain, since it’s hispano-arabic origins to the Golden Age, following a chronological perspective. Beyond the acquisition of knowledge regarding the main works and authors from this period, students must deepen their knowledge on rhetoric, thematic, narrative-technological and ideological code that structure the different medieval, renaissance and baroque literary genres, representing the diversity that the Castilian language managed to reach.

Syllabus

1. The origins of Spanish. Medieval Spanish poetry and prose.

2. The Romancero, La Celestina. Theater in the crossroads of the 15th and 16th century.

3. Renaissance poetry: the Italianistic tendencies of Boscán and Garcilaso; other petrarchan poets; literary traditionalist reactions; the lyrical schools (Salamanca and Seville). Baroque poetry: Quevedo and Góngora.

4. Golden age novelistic forms. The Lazarillo and the picaresque novel. Cervantes.

5. Theater, Lope de Vega and Calderón.
