Teaching Methods
The methodologies to be used pursue the goal of the enhancement of the students' critical autonomy. Apart from moments when the teacher will lecture, in order to provide the necessary framework, classes will be designed in the main so as to open up spaces of reflection on the selected texts. One will thus resort to oral and written exercises of textual analysis and commentary, while students shall also take on the individual responsibility of providing oral presentations (on concepts authors, figures, texts).
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the semester, students should
1. have consolidated their reading and analytical skils and be in a position to understand critically the social and political positionality of literary texts;
2. be familiar with relevant German-language authors and texts, according to the topics chosen every year for de unit;
3. be able to identify with confidence and to approach analytically different literary genres, compositional devices, textual structures and thematic features;
4. have improved their knowledge of German and their ability to express themselves in Portuguese.

The unit focuses on German-language authors and texts representative of German-language literature. It aims to offer fundamental references, but organizes itself also along thematic lines. In 2015-2016 the main thematic focus will be on “memory and violence”.
1. The political, economic, social and cultural situation of the German-language countries in the aftermath of the Second World War
2. Main literary tendencies in the first decades after 1945;
3. Analysis of literary and programmatic texts;
4. Reflection on literary modes and genres;
5. Study of texts by authors such as W. Borchert, H. B.ll, G. Eich, B. Brecht, F. Dürrenmatt, M. Frisch, M. L. Kaschnitz, A. Seghers, N. Sachs, P. Celan, H. M. Enzensberger, I. Bachmann, P. Weiss, Ch. Wolf, Th. Bernhard, among others.
Whenever pertinent, classes will make use of audiovisual material.
