Teaching Methods
Based on students' participation, teaching methods will include pratical tasks related to i) textual and contextual analysis; ii) individual and joint work of translation/revision and editing; and iii) commenting, discussion and examination of translated work.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the semester, students will have developed the ability to understand lexical and syntactic structures in German and improve their means of expression in Portuguese. With a focus and a hands-on approach to actual texts, they will be able to identify conditions and configurations of the corresponding communicative situations in both source and target sociocultural and linguistic contexts. They will be able to handle dictionaries and manage their working principles. At the end of each translation task, they will be able to describe and explain their decisions. All this will lead students to develop, consolidate and improve language awareness.
Work Placement(s)
NoSyllabus
The syllabus design is based on the principle that translating entails linguistic training and learning that always starts with the analysis of source texts. For each edition, texts of small or medium dimension will be selected according to timely sociohistorical and sociocultural issues and students' personal profiles and linguistic proficiency in both German and Portuguese. Texts or topics can also be drawn from materials used in German language courses, as a way to consolidate knowledge acquired throughout the language curriculum. Selected texts will determine the particular German-based lexical, grammatical and cultural aspects to be studied and exercised in contrast to Portuguese language and culture.
