Recommended Prerequisites

At least two semesters of German.

Teaching Methods

The sessions will be based on student’s participation, and will include some sort of a) contextualization, followed by b) the translation exercise itself, c) translation post-editing, d) translation critique, either on an individual or on a collective basis.

The evaluation has two different components:

1) a mix of participation in the sessions + small translations + elaboration and presentation of a more thorough translation: altogether this component is classified for a maximum of 65%.

2) On the other hand, there will be a written test at the end of the semester, classified maximally for 35%.

Learning Outcomes

This course aims at developing proficiency in the practical aspects of translation from German into Portuguese, raising student’s awareness for important measures towards a fluent result. This course only has a propedeutical nature, in comparison to what would look like a more professional or specialized approach. It aims at creating the opportunity for the students to perhaps have a first experience of translation at all,  thus practising the structures of the German language (or of the Portuguese language, in case the students are not native speakers of Portuguese) learned so far and in this way developing a better linguistic consciousness.

Syllabus

Theoretical issues (the problem of equivalence, translational pragmatics, etc.) will be present during every session, but may be canalized to deeper individual work, as translation practice itself will be at the core of this course, both as a source of learning and as language practice itself. The program deals with the translation of a corpus of authentic texts, not too long, especially from the press, popular scientific writings, literary works, law texts or texts about translation itself. One of the main activities will be based on the translation into Portuguese of a group of texts from child and youth literature, as well as excerpts of one book dealing with a popular discussion of philosophical matters, insofar giving continuity, according to the student’s interests, to work being carried out since previous semesters, or supporting through translation of some excerpts from German texts the study for other courses.
