Teaching Methods

3) Short oral presentations (of concepts, authors, figures, texts), and group- and/or pair-work.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the semester, students should

1) be familiar with German-speaking literature from mid-18th to mid-19th centuries, and to be acquainted with:

1.1) the main literary movements, and their programmatic principles;

1.2) representative authors;

1.3) paradigmatic works and most common literary genres;

1.4) dominant stylistic principles;

2) have consolidated their ability in analyzing literary texts;

3) understand the relation between texts and the corresponding literary and cultural contexts, as well as the historical evolution of those contexts;

4) know how to distinguish literary genres, their structures and conventions;

5) have improved their knowledge of German and Portuguese;

6) be able to read research papers on literature and realize their importance in literary studies.

Syllabus

The c.u. aims to acquaint the students with a range of texts and authors that are representative of the various literary movements, currents and tendencies in German-speaking literature, from the Age of Enlightenment to the1848 March Revolution

The programme will include the following items:

1. Caracterization of Aufklärung, Empfindsamkeit, Sturm und Drang, Klassik, Romantik, Junges Deutschland e Vormärz

2. Study of canonic authors that are representative of those movements, such as G.E. Lessing,J.W. Goethe, F. Schiller, C.Brentano,J.v.Eichendorff,F.Hölderlin,H.v. Kleist, H.Heine,and G. Büchner,among others

3. Analysis of representative texts of different literary genres(ballad, Lied,elegy, hymn, ode, sonnet; tale, fable, novella, parable; drama, a.o.)

4. Reading and discussion of research papers on literature

We will privilege short texts provided with Portuguese and/or English translations

The syllabus may change in various editions,depending on the academic staff member.
