“War narratives”: war is a fertile terrain for the questioning of “limits”: those of the “I” and the “Other”, of cultures; of differences articulated on the lines of gender, nation, or race; of notions such as violence, oppression, resistance, memory, trauma, and their aesthetic representation. Comparative Literature is precisely the area that crosses borders and explores limits. Based on war narratives (20th and 21st centuries), this course wishes to discover the various perspectives adopted by comparative literary studies in promoting a dialogue between cultures, between knowledge fields and between different arts. We will talk about imagology, reception, translation, gender studies, cultural studies, and post-colonial studies. We will work on the literary text and on this and its crossings with film, painting and photography, children literature and comics; we will work on the North, the South, the West, the East in a first approach to Literature as World Literature.
