Recommended Prerequisites

Minimum: A1 level in German (German 1 and 2).

Teaching Methods

1) lecture with guidelines and maps available through a data projector;

2) contrastive approach to Phonetics, Phonology and Inflection (of nouns, adjectives and verbs);

3) dialogue with the students;

4) phonetic transcription exercises;

5) carrying out short research tasks outside the classroom having in mind the oral presentation to be prepared as group work. 

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the term students should:

(i) have gathered relevant data concerning the situation of German (Hochdeutsch) in the world, being aware of its pluricentric nature;

(ii) recognize the most important moments in the evolution of standard German until present time;

(iii) have an idea of the distribution of dialectal groups along the continuum of dialects in German speaking countries and take notice of their connection with the history of this language;

(iv) be familiar with prominent characteristics of German Phonetics and Phonology (according to the standard) – in contrast with European Portuguese – in order to improve their performance;

(v) have developed their expertise in critical areas of noun, adjective and verb Inflection in order to improve their performance. 

Work Placement(s)



The situation of German in the world with emphasis on its pluricentric nature – a language with differing norms – is the starting point of this course followed by a presentation of the most important moments in the history of standard German/Hochdeutsch. This standard is also presented alongside the dialect continuum in German speaking countries subsisting from the remote past until nowadays. Moreover the Phonetics and Phonology of standard German are studied in contrast with the sound system and prominent phonetic properties of Portuguese. The same contrastive approach serves as a guideline in the discussion about critical areas of the inflection system of nouns, adjectives and verbs in German.
