Teaching Methods
Practical classes based on discussion of texts and the presentation of both written and oral work produced by students. Students will be expected to read regularly throughout the semester and will be encouraged to keep a reading log. Students will work in pairs and discuss the chosen topics in small groups. Students will be expected to produce reports on student seminars, further developing their written skills.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
- demonstrate good control of standard grammar
- demonstrate an ability to understand stylistic choices
- demonstrate adequate proofreading skills
- demonstrate an understanding of what editing involves and how it differs from proofreading
- give a short presentation on a topic of their choice
- produce summaries of a variety of different styles of text

This course will build on the knowledge gained in English 1-4. Students taking English 5 are nearing the end of the undergraduate English course so the focus will be on language that will take them into further academic study or into the working/professional world. Particular emphasis will be placed on oral and reading skills, ensuring that English is Language will be seen not as a means of a means of communicating observations about the world, but rather as a means of constructing what we see and getting others to see it too. Classes will take the format of seminar-style discussions, student presentations, individual and pair work, culminating in a final project to be recorded and presented as a video. Students will also be encouraged to read widely (beyond the class bibliography) and record their observations in a reading log.
