The course books, Oxford EAP (English for Academic Purposes) Level B2, and the Oxford Grammar for EAP, are fundamental to each lesson. Recordings, videos and texts of an academic nature featured in these books are used to generate various listening, speaking, reading, writing and research activities which may be carried out individually or in pairs or groups.
Learning Outcomes
The students will:
Continue to develop their writing, reading, listening and speaking skills for academic work in English at B2 level.
Continue to develop essential skills for academic work such as being able to recognize and use cause and effect language when making an argument; being able to recognize and use evaluative language.
Continue to revise and develop their knowledge of meta-language and the grammatical structure of clauses and ways of hedging (modal verbs, passive versus active) with particular reference to academic use.
Upon passing this unit, students should feel equipped to begin work at a C1 level in English 5.
Work Placement(s)
NoSyllabus
English 4 begins to focus on the students’ abilities to form their own academic arguments through reading and listening to a number of written and presented academic texts from a variety of research fields. Students move towards an understanding of evaluation within an academic setting. As before, they continue to listen to and read a variety of academic texts, and are asked to begin using these models themselves with the written and spoken work they themselves and their colleagues present to the class.
