Teaching Methods

Teaching is predominantly task-based rather than expository, and participants are expected to engage actively with a variety of analytical tasks followed by feedback and discussion. Class interaction takes place principally through pair-work and group-work in which participants are encouraged to formulate inductively their understanding of the English lexico-grammatical system. Active participation in class is expected through prior preparation of class material, and, for this reason, participants are regularly set small-scale research assignments for class presentation and discussion.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course, participants should be able to: display improved competence and language awareness in the areas of lexico-grammar studied; recognise and produce a wider range of vocabulary, particularly in academic registers; analyse written and spoken text, identifying salient features of cohesion, genre and register; produce a short academic essay, observing academic conventions of reporting; give short academic presentations and participate effectively in small group discussions; display improved competence in using dictionaries and grammars.

Syllabus

This course continues the revision and consolidation of English lexico-grammar begun in English 1 and English 2, focussing on the following areas: modality, conditionals, and reporting. Other areas of grammar are revised in accordance with students' needs. Particular attention is also given to expanding vocabulary. The study of grammar and vocabulary is approached by analysing language variation across a range of contemporary registers. Writing, reading and speaking skills are developed through studying aspects of Early Modern English (following on chronologically from the historical survey begun in English 2), and participants are expected to research and write an essay on a chosen course-related topic. This work also forms the topic of the presentation and discussion in small groups which students perform for assessment. Attention is also given to enabling more effective use of dictionaries in editing written work.
