Syllabus

The area of grammar studied in detail in this semester is the noun group. Students work independently on their areas of difficulty using the Cobuild grammar, and this self-study is supplemented by classroom work on items that are frequently problematic for Portuguese learners.

Reference skills form an important component of this course. Students are introduced to and encouraged to make use of the detailed information given by a more sophisticated reference work (Swan’s Practical English Usage). They also work on their ability to interpret and make use of the information provided in a learner’s dictionary (including pronunciation).

Attention is given to helping students improve their study skills, both in terms of general techniques for increasing efficiency and the specific skills of reading and note-taking.

Students also work to improve their overall competence in the language by focusing on each of the primary language skills – reading, writing, listening and speaking.
