Teaching Methods

Theoretical and practical classes. The theoretical content will be accompanied by exposure images as support for reflection and debate, leading students to critical thinking. The learning will be supplemented, whenever is possible, through study visits, previously prepared by the students.

Learning Outcomes

To promote knowledge about the Portuguese artistic production in the world from the fifteenth century on and lead students to reflect on the phenomenon of miscegenation. Extending the analysis to various fields stages of the Portuguese Empire, sought will therefore be covering the arts in Portuguese colonial territory, always in dialogue with indigenous cultures. In short, to encourage a critical reflection on the main concepts involved, and to promote respect for cultures under the political Portuguese domain.

Syllabus

I. The fundamental concepts of colony and colonial art.
II. Acculturation (phenomena selection, incorporation, rejection, miscegenation and modification).
III. The artistic trajectory of the Portuguese world:
1. The implementation of an artistic discourse of power. The role of the State and religious orders.
2. The islands in the Atlantic Ocean and the African continent.
3. India and the extension to the East.
4. Brazil: the formatting of the colony to independence.
