Teaching Methods

Theory: Exposição dos principais conteúdos programáticos. Theoretical-practical: Inteactive part based on a constant observation and analysis of images (epígraphs). Practical: Exercises.

Use of PowerPoint presentations as teaching aids.

Several written tests will be given during the semester, in accordance with the periodic assessment schedule.

Learning Outcomes

Students should be able to:

- identify the different types of Latin inscriptions

- master the basic (but essential) notions of Latin epigraphy

- read and translate some Roman inscriptions

- comment on an inscription from an historical and paleographical perspective

- identify the anthroponymy or theonomy in an historical context

- understand how people are identified, a cursus honorum or an imperial title

- understand the rules which a good epigraphy should follow

- identify the value of an epigraphic monument as an important source of historical knowledge for the study of Antiquity at various levels.

Syllabus

1. The epigraphic studies: concept, importance, contributes and future research prospects.

2. The inscriptions and their study: from the typological description of the epigraphic monument to the historic commentary

3. Some basic notions of epigraphic Latin and the most frequent acronyms and abbreviations.

4. The Latin name: anthroponomy and onomastic structure.

5. The main types of epigraphs: votive, funerary, honorific, monumental and road inscriptions (base structure of the texts / formularies)


6. Epigraphy as an important documental source and a source of historical knowledge: the social status, religion, culture, administrative life and other aspects of social and private everyday life.
