Theoretical-practical, with abundant use of projected images and viewing of films. External invited guests. Study Visits.

Learning Outcomes

Students will learn to recognize the main organizational and practical models of war that existed in Western Europe between the 9th century B.C and the 2oth century A. D. putting them in the respective civilizational contexts.

Understand the importance of war as a nuclear factor of transition in history.

Know and understand the role of the major European military commanders over the period considered, and how to identify the brightest moments of the time.

Syllabus

Introduction: Man and War - reflections on an old dilemma.  General notions of Polemologia.

1. The War in the Classical World (Greece and Rome) and its civilizational framework (5th century  B.C - 5th  century A.D. Alexander the Great, Hannibal Barca and Scipio, the African.

2. Military arts in the Middle Ages: the triumph of the barbarian armies of heavy cavalry 6th - 11th centuries A.D.). The Battle of Hastings (1066): a day to change Europe.

3. The Crusades and the war in the Middle Ages: the renovation of the 14th century and the 100 Years War (1337-1453).

4. The Art of War in the Modern Era: 'military revolution' in an environment of professionalism and technological development. The Nassau, Gustavus Adolphus and Frederick-the-Great of Prussia. The Napoleonic armies. The Portuguese case.

5. The two world wars of the 2oth century. Key moments and political, social and cultural consequences
