Theoretical-practical, with the active participation of students.  Case by case participation of experts invited to the presentation and discussion of some issues.

Learning Outcomes

Students will gain an updated, pedagogically systematic and well articulated perspective of the history of Portuguese America and Brazil as independent nation-state, in the economic, social, cultural and political areas.  The proposed training is designed to develop the capacity for reflection, and research organization.  The contact and understanding of different historiographical perspectives allows students to develop critical thinking and communication skills in oral and written forms

Administration and powers in Portuguese America.

Racism and slavery in the colony.

Colonial economy and the Portuguese imperial dynamics in the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries: from the sugar cycle to the gold cycle.

Church, Culture and Society: missionary and social control.

Inequalities of wealth, social hierarchies and riots.

The process of independence and the constitution of the Empire.

Centralism and federalism: separatist temptations.

Political dissent, abolitionist campaign and formation of the Republic (1889-1930).

Between revolution and the dictatorship: the era of Getúlio Vargas.

The transition to democracy: the presidency of Juscelino Kubitschek (1956-1964). Political crisis and military power.
