Teaching Methods

Theoretical-practical, with regular use of text analysis with documentary support, presentations previously prepared by students, projected images, and if room conditions permit, watching films. Study visits.

Learning Outcomes

Provide students with a general knowledge of the great paintings of Greek history, a plurithematic overview from the II millennium B.C. to the I century B.C. Provide a deeper understanding of the history of Ancient Rome, the phases of the Monarchy, the Republic and Empire (VIII centuries B.C. to the V A.D.  C.), mastery of the main themes of political, social, economic and cultural history.  Promote recognition by students of the main protagonists of Greek and Roman history over the periods considered.  Introduce students to the broad themes of the history of Byzantium.  Steer students to the understanding of the importance of classical and Byzantine legacy for the configuration of modern Europe.

Syllabus

1. General overview of the history of Ancient Greece (II millennium BC- 1 century BC): the appearance of the Greeks and their expansion.  The polis system: the ideal autarchy. Greek unity and its limits. The Hellenistic kingdoms.

2. The founding of Rome and the Roman monarchy.

3. The Roman Republic: institutions, internal expansion and dominion of the Mediterranean. Conquest of the Greek world.  Conflicts in Rome during the last century of the Republic. The triumph of Augustus and the imperial model.

4. The Golden Age of the High Roman Empire (1-III centuries A.D.) and the fabled roman military machine.

5. The crisis of the  III century and the challenges of the Low Empire. The Barbarian Invasions and the end of the Western Roman Empire.

6. The Legacy of Rome and the survival of Byzantium - the Eastern Roman Empire. Presence of Greek culture in Byzantium.
