Teaching Methods
Presentation and lectures and the introduction to the general and specific bibliography. Reading texts and their analysis and interpretation in order to encourage active student participation. The theoretical and practical form helps to clarify concepts and to explain the structural basis of the themes under consideration.
Learning Outcomes
It is intended that students acquire an overview of Portuguese history in the XIX-XXI centuries, understanding events, speeches, current and relevant figures and movements in a contextual framework context, so that they are able to interpret modern and contemporary history of Portugal in various spatial and temporal time frames; to understand phenomena in contemporary Portuguese reality; to critically reflect on issues of Portuguese contemporary thought and analysing issues of political, economic, social, cultural, scientific and religious character.

1. From the Monarchy to the Republic: political, economic, social, cultural, scientific and religious framework.
2. Fin de siècle crisis: decadence and regeneration – socialists, republicans and anarchists. Associations and the workers’ movement. Cultural and scientific production.
3. The triumph of the Republic – projects, dynamics, actors. Anti-republican movements. The anti-clerical movement and secularization. Economic, social, cultural and scientific dynamics.
4. The military coup of 28 May 1926 and the establishment of the dictatorship – political context and reactions.
3. The "Estado Novo" – political structure of the regime. Salazar and Marcello Caetano – social, economic, cultural and scientific context. Censorship, repression and opposition movements.
4. The origins of the April 1974 Revolution and the period of democratic transition. Constructing democracy: practices, actors, foreign policy, culture.
