Teaching Methods

Most sessions of teaching will be based on powerpoint presentations, asking students to discuss the slides in the presentation. We will also be viewing different visual study materials such as photographs, films and documentaries, as appropriate.

Learning Outcomes

Through an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the visual and communication, students should develop a higher visual literacy, learning how meanings can be visually constructed. At the end of this course, the students should have developed:

• A set of skills necessary to interpret the content of visual images, analyze their social impact and discuss their goals and ideological implications

• Familiarity with basic concepts related to the analysis of visual culture in art, photography, photojournalism or in the movies.

• Ability to discuss the visual culture in relation to expressions of difference and power hierarchy in society.

• Ability to think critically about the power of images in building different versions of the world.
