Proficiency in Portuguese (level C1).

Teaching Methods

The methodology follows the theoretical and practical content of the course. In classes with greater theoretical weight, the contents are exposed by the teacher, with the use of data show, so that the speech is accompanied by a more effective and clear way. In the second half of the semester, classes operate on a workshop, in which students are confronted with diverse examples from media texts and perform various exercises.

Learning Outcomes

This Course aims to develop, at an advanced level, the maternal language skills of students. The objectives of this course are:

- To promote a thorough understanding of the functioning of language as a complex system of communication;

- Filling gaps in grammatical content learning, particularly with regard to the syntax and spelling.

- To promote the correct use of the mother tongue, both in its oral and written record;

- Raising awareness of the importance of Portuguese as language of culture;

- Raising awareness of the variety of uses of the Portuguese language, depending on contexts and functionalities;

- Disseminate authors and works of the Lusophone world, bridging any gaps in reading.

Syllabus

I. LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION

a) Language as a model system of the world;

b) The language in use: enunciation theory and the theory of speech acts;

c) Varieties of Portuguese.

 

II. LANGUAGE SPOKEN AND WRITTEN LANGUAGE

a) From oral to written, two registers, one language;

b) The performative dimension of oral discours.

 

III. WRITTEN LANGUAGE: THE SPELLING

a) The rules of graphic accent;

b) Punctuation marks;

c) Some critical issues.

 

IV. THE SYNTAX

a) The coordination and subordination;

b) Pronouns: forms, functions and syntactic placement in the sentence;

c) Syntactical quirks

          1. Questions agreement on complex syntactic structures;

           2. Use of prepositions: nominal and verbal regencies;

            3. Syntactic structures of subordination.
