Expositive method; practical examples including clinical case analysis and discussion.

Learning Outcomes

[1] To analyse critically the criteria to differentiate between normal and disturbed behaviour;

[2] To describe the main models of psychopathology - medical / biological; psychological; sociological; biopsychosocial, especially the diathesis-stress model;

[3] To gain knowledge on the basic terminology and concepts related to psychopathology (e.g., primary, secondary, tertiary prevention), and to become familiar with the main classification systems of mental disorders;

[4] To correctly define psychopathological signs and symptoms related to mental examination;

[5] To describe clinically the most prevalent mental disorders potentially relevant to social work (e.g., mood disorders, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia; post-traumatic stress disorder, substance use disorders, among others).

Syllabus

• The concept of mental disorder.

• Main models about psychopathology (biological models, psychological models, sociocultural models, integrative biopsychosocial models, e.g., diathesis-stress model).

• The concepts of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention. 

• Basic concepts related to mental examination.

• General notions about the main classification systems of mental disorders.

• Clinical description of several mental disorders, namely: anxiety disorders; adjustment disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder; obsessive-compulsive disorder; mood disorders (depressive; bipolar); schizophrenia, psychotic episode and delusional disorder; substance use and additive disorders.
