Curricular units recommended: Social Education; Educational Psychology; Sociology of Education; Introduction to Educational Sciences.

Teaching Methods

The classes will be organised in order to alternate lectures with dialogue, discussion of texts and debates, case analysis, simulations and reflection on educational situations. Obsrervation  processes will be used for the multicultural contexts. Group work with oral presentations and dynamization of debates by the students (presentations of the projects under review) and invited experts (seminars). Tutorial guidance.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the program specified below student should be able to:

- Understand the theoretical references of interculturality

- Distinguish the theoretical references and educational practices of the monoculturalism and of the multiculturalism in relation to interculturality

- Argue the relationships between culture, identity and alterity, and the hybrid nature of identity

- Analyze educational policies and practices of intercultural dialogue and intercultural education

- Critically analyse projects and intercultural education practices.

1. Education and Interculturality: Challenging the relationship with the other and the different

2. The concepts of: Culture, education, language and citizenship; cultural diversity and cultural heritage; cultural minorities and majorities, multiculturalism and interculturalism

3. Objectives and guidelines of intercultural education according to UNESCO

4. Cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue: international framework and regulatory instruments

5. Educational issues in school contexts, family, cultural and multi-ethnic community/recreational: the importance of intercultural mediation.

6. Projects and programs of Intercultural Education-  intercultural curriculum design; intercultural pedagogy and living together pedagogy

7. Concerns, attitudes and intercultural skills for education and training

8. The project: "ConVivências de InterCulturalidade": Training and research around the intercultural: challenges for an intercultural University.
