Teaching Methods

The presentation of theoretical contents will be used in association with the active participation of students, through discussions, document analysis and production (printed, audiovisual, and digital), and group work.

Learning Outcomes

The uc Education Media invites students to critical analysis and reflection on media reality and on the educational challenges offered by media. The aim is to create opportunities to build knowledge around major theoretical perspectives and lines of research on media impact and contribute to the development of a personal attitude of critical autonomy regarding media discourses.

 

Skills to be developed:

- Relate the changes in the media field with the evolution of society;

- Reflect on media social and educational impact;

- Distinguish different approaches of the interface between education and media, namely the education in media, education with media, and media education;

- Understand the evolution of studies and theoretical perspectives on media impact;      

- Discuss some of the main topics related to media influence, which have been under investigation;

- Reflect on the role of the family, formal and non-formal education in promoting media literacy.

- Different approaches of the interface between education and media: media education, education with media, and education in media

- Reasons for media education

3. Evolution of theories and studies on media action

- The powerful mass media

- The limited and indirect effects of media

- Return to the powerful media. The cognitive effects of media; media representations of the world
