Recommended Prerequisites
Knowledge of Sociology of Education, History of Education and on the Portuguese education system.
Teaching Methods
We intend to combine the expository method for presentation and elucidation, with the use of pedagogical practices based on student work. During the curricular unit, literature reviews and/or investigation work shall be encouraged; as well as small works on the issues covered in class; preparing questions about the content of the classes; performing small summaries on topics addressed; reflection on the principles, ideological orientations, educational conditions and the assumptions of educational practices.
Learning Outcomes
In this curricular unit, students should recognize the importance of comparative studies in education and know the major approaches and research methods in Comparative Education, because, regardless of the status conferred by the various epistemological discussions, comparison is part of today’s debate on education.
At the end of this cuuricular unit students should be able:
- To identify and characterize the main approaches in Comparative Education.
- To differentiate Comparative Education from International Education.
- To use in the educational reflection knowledge coming from the comparative study of education.
- To relate the conditions of society with Comparative Education approaches and with the educational dynamics in different periods and in different spaces.
- To know the contribution of international organizations to Comparative Education.
- To identify and characterize trends of education in the world.
