Teaching Methods

Dynamic and interactive activities in pairs or groups will often be developed by simulating everyday situations, focusing on the communicative needs of students.

These will include tasks covering 4 different fields: (i) listening; (ii) speaking; (iii) reading; (iv) writing.

Students will have contact with several social fields, different situations, types of written and oral texts, speech acts, subjects, and concepts that will be necessary for using language in simple communicative activities, in accordance with level A2.

Learning Outcomes

The goal of this course unit is to develop communication skills in Portuguese at level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL).

According to the general goals set for level A2 of the CEFRL, after completing this course unit, students should be able to:

- interact in simple conversations about concrete subjects of everyday life;

- participate in very short conversations, with various speakers, demonstrating practical skills to handle basic situations of everyday life, such as tasks or routines that call for the exchange of simple and direct information on familiar and common subjects;

- write short simple notes and messages related to subjects of everyday life.

Syllabus

Focusing on the subject fields described in the course unit “Portuguese Language Structures”, the syllabus will address:

 

A.         Types of texts (oral and written):

descriptive texts; narrative texts; dialogues; advertisements; weather reports; news pieces; simple injunctions; simple and short reports; letters/e-mails; expository texts.

 

B.          Communicative acts:

•          describing people, animals, and objects

•          expressing desires and emotions

•          asking/requesting something

•          asking for information/clarification

•          expressing physical sensations

•          expressing short opinions

•          using the appropriate forms of address for different types of speakers

•          being polite using the correct expressions and resources for each particular circumstance
