Theorectical lectures, group discussions, debates, demonstrations, field work (observations and interviews), and literature reviews).
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the syllabus specified below, students should be able:
1. To understand and discuss the main conceptual and historical references of Adults’ Educationand Training.
2. To identify, describe and critically discuss the main characteristics of today's society, at the scientific, technological, social, political, economic, demographic and cultural level, that make Adults’ Education and Training an imperative issue.
3. To recognize and critically analyse the role of adults’education and training, in the Portuguese context.
4. To identify and understand the main characteristics of adults towards learning.
5. To know and critically analyse some of the main principles underlying adults’ learning.
6. To identify the specificity of educational activities with adults.

1. The concept of adult, education and training, formal, non-formal and informal education
2. Knowledge society and Adults’ Education and Training
3. Remote origins of Adult Education and its brief history
4. Adult Education in post-World War II: Role and Conferences of UNESCO and of other organizations
5. Adult Education in Portugal.
II. How adults learn? Theoretical references and identification of practices:
1. Adult as a learner: the specificity of adults’ learning
2. Main dimensions involved in the learning process within a development perspective
3. Educational implications of the main characteristics and dimensions inherent in adult life
4. Andragogy: concept, assumptions, process and criticisms
5. Practical illustrations of structures and processes of educational/ training work with adults, according to field work.
