Teaching Methods

The presentation of theoretical contents will be used in association with the active participation of students, through discussions, document analysis (articles, legislation) and group work.

Learning Outcomes

This course is mainly intended to promote reflection on the organizational and administrative dimensions of educational processes. By approaching different perspectives of organizational theory, it is intended to provide students with critical analysis of educational organizations in its complexity. From the perspective of a theoretical substantiation and a normative framework, this course will provide knowledge about the administration of education in Portugal, taking into account the international context.

Some of the competencies that students should develop are:

- to recognize the importance of organizational and administrative dimensions in education;

- to analyze critically the structures and functioning of educational organizations;

- to understand basic concepts and theoretical perspectives used in analyzing the processes of administration and management of education and training;

- to know the evolution of administration and management of education in Portugal.

1. Educational Administration and School Administration and Management

- Definition of a specific field of analysis

- Teaching and research in Educational Administration in Portugal

2. The educational organizations: basic concepts and different types of organizational theories

3. School as a "complex social organization"

- the need for a focus on normative, interpretative and descriptive study of school

4. Administration of the Educational System (ES)

- Models of administration of ES: centralization, decentralization, deconcentration and autonomy

-  The transformation of the role of the State in the school administration and management in Portugal and other European countries

5. Evolution of the educational administration and school management in Portugal

- From the revolution of 1974, 25th April, until today

- The autonomy and management of educational organizations.
