Learning Outcomes

This curricular unit is mainly intended to contribute to the development of a "sociological look" at the reality of education, seeking to promote a reflection and critical analysis on the social dimension of education and its complexity. This curricular unit is intended also to contribute to the development of research and intervention competence in the educational field for the promotion of a more inclusive and equitable society.

Learning outcomes:

Recognize the social dimension of education and its complexity.

Analyses educational phenomena as social phenomena.

Understand the specificity of the main perspectives of sociological analysis of education and essential issues.

Develop analytical, critical and intervention skills in formal and non-formal educational contexts.

Syllabus

The unity of the social and the diversity of Social Sciences. Education and society. The social dimension of education. Sociology of education – evolution and perspectives.

2. Schools and schooling evolution in the second half of the 20th century. From a time of “promises” to a time of “uncertainties”. The promises of development, social mobility and equality. The structural-functionalist approach and human capital theory.
