Teaching Methods

The methodologies will follow those recommended for teaching a non-native language:

• Individual and collective production of written texts of various text types;

• implementation of techniques for text improvement;

• understanding / interpretation of written texts;

• verbal interaction between teacher and students and interaction between students (presenting subjects for the production of written texts; debates in order to prepare the written production; oral debates);

• simulation of everyday regularly encountered situations in order to promote spoken interaction making use of different linguistic registers;

• metalinguistic reflection;

• theoretical presentation;

• practice of the rules and contents that were taught in simulated situations of use.

Evaluation

Continuous assessment (40%) + written test (60%)

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, students must:

i) have some reading fluency and expressiveness;

ii) understand the main points of different typology of spoken and written texts addressing known and current issues in clear standard language.

iii) produce simple spoken and written coherente and connected texts on topics that are familiar or of personal interest, using standart language ;

iv) produce different types of texts using the standard Portuguese specificities in both its written and spoken codes

Syllabus

Syntactic-semantic issues:

•              distinctive contexts in the use of synonyms and some verbs

•              expressions with modal meanings:

        - Adverbs of enunciation

        - Verbs: duvidar/ crer/ julgar/ saber/ ter a certeza…

        - poder + infinitive; ser proibido / estar proibido/a de; proibir; não ser permitido…

        - ainda bem que + indicative; lamentar que + subjunctive; ser bom que + subjunctive…

Mechanisms of textual cohesion: connectors

Textual sequences: description, narration, dialogue, exposition, argumentation

Text Types: letter / email, story, summary, text expressing an opinion

 Sociolinguistic and pragmatic aspects:

•              Forms of address

•              Personal, spatial and temporal deixis

•              basic illocutionary: ask, ask, reject, accept, express desire / will / intention

•              interrogative structures: repeat orders, confirmation, clarification

•              indirect speech: requests, orders, questions ...
