Teaching Methods

The methodologies will follow those recommended for teaching a non-native language:

• Individual and collective production of written texts of various text types;

• implementation of techniques for text improvement;

• understanding / interpretation of written texts;

• verbal interaction between teacher and students and interaction between students (presenting subjects for the production of written texts; debates in order to prepare the written production; oral debates);

• simulation of everyday regularly encountered situations in order to promote spoken interaction making use of different linguistic registers;

• metalinguistic reflection;

• theoretical presentation;

• practice of the rules and contents that were taught in simulated situations of use.

Evaluation

Continuous assessment (40%) + written test (60%)

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, students must:

i) have some reading fluency and expressiveness;

ii) talk fluently and effectively;

iii) Can express him / herself fluently in a clear and detailed way on a wide variety of topics and issues and give an opinion on a current issue, discussing the advantages and disadvantages of various options;

 iv) understand the main points of a complex speech in standard Portuguese, on both concrete and abstract issues;

v) produce texts that reveal coherence and cohesion and demonstrate a relatively high degree of grammatical control;

vi) produce texts of various typologies that incorporate the specifics of standard Portuguese written and oral codes;

vii) Integrate the knowledge acquired in the course Portuguese Language Structures

Syllabus

Syntactic- semantic aspects:

• different contexts of the use of synonyms, antonyms, hyponyms, hypernyms and some verbs

• expression of modal values:

- Adverbs of enunciation

- Verbs : duvidar/crer/julgar/saber/ter a certeza…

- poder+infinitive ; ser/estar proibido/a de; proibir; não ser permitido…-

 - ainda bem que+indicative; lamentar que + subjuntive; ser bom que + subjuntive…

Mechanisms of textual cohesion: connectors

Textual sequences: description, narration, dialogue, exposition, argumentation

Text Types: letter/email, story, summary, text of opinion

Sociolinguistic and pragmatic aspects:

• Forms of address

•Personal, spatial and temporal deixis

•basic illocutionary: ask, reject, accept, express desire/will/intention

•interrogative structures: repeat orders, confirmation, clarification

•indirect speech: requests, orders, questions ...

  - Use of the imperfect, modal verbs, the forms of courtesy and various enunciative modalities
