Teaching Methods

The methodologies will follow those recommended for teaching a non-native language:

 

  • Theoretical exposition;
  • exercises practicing the recognition of vowel sounds and consonantal sounds and its pronunciation
  • Exercises in pronunciation: hearing and repetition of words, phrases and texts;
  • verbal interaction between teacher and students and interaction between students
  • listening comprehension exercises;
  • Exercises to develop the spontaneous production.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, students should be able to:
i) Pronounce in an understandable way a repertoire of phrases and simple sentences on topics which are familiar
ii) Establish the relationship between graphic and phonic units in simple sentences;

iii) understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters;

iv) Read simple and short texts in an understandable way;
v) Understand a clear and carefully articulated speech;
vi) Interact in routine situations on familiar topics and activities requiring a simple and direct exchange of information.

Syllabus

  • Vowel and consonantal sounds in the normative variety of Portuguese language
  • Relationship between phoneme and grapheme;
  • Use of the International Phonetic Alphabet;
  • Glides and decreasing oral and nasal diphthongs;
  • Hiatuses and rising diphthongs
  • The main stress in verbs and no verbs;
  • Rules for placing the accent mark;

Intonation: declarative, exclamatory, interrogative and imperative sentences.
