Teaching Methods

The the course follows a  theoretical and practical regime: teacher presents contents, provides clarification and supervises students tasks, students are supposed to submit assignments, participate in debates and comments. Beyond a written test, students are encouraged to presentate papers and informally participate in classes.

Learning Outcomes

This the course The aims to deepen available information about evolution of Portugal from early nineteenth century to present day, with particular attention to thirties to seventies of twentieth century. It is intended to compare different interpretations proposed by national and foreign historians. the course focuses on political-institutional, socioeconomic, cultural and mentalities specific features; in "mainland" and in “colonial empire”, in relationships established with or countries at an Iberian, European and global levels.

It is intended to facilitate acquisition of skills allowing identification and processing of data, both on process of "modernization of Portuguese society," as on process of its integration in "capitalist world-economy"; recognition of periods and most important "historical actors" (individual and collective) in contemporary Portugal; comparison among characteristics or dominant choices made by Portugal and identities or majority choices in or countries.

1 - Portugal at end of Old Regime.

2 - From French Invasions to stabilization of conservative liberal regime.

3 - Fontismo: From Regeneration to British Ultimatum.

4 - monarchical and republican demoliberals regimes: from 1890 / 1891 crisis to October 5th 1910 and to military coup of 28 May 1926.

5 - Portugal's participation in First World War.

6 - military dictatorship and transition Salazar’s regime.

7 – consolidation of Estado Novo in "era of fascist regimes."

8 - involvement of Portugal in Spanish Civil War and in Second World War.

9 - Estado Novo from 1940 to sixty years, "Cold War", economic and social changes and opposition to dictatorship.

10 – colonial wars, Revolution of April 25, 1974 and "decolonization".

11 - From PREC to "normalization" and to integration into EEC.

12 - History of Portugal at present.
