Learning Outcomes

The main objectives of the course are:

- to achieve better understanding of specific issues of solid state kinetics, its application to relevant materials processes, and corresponding methods, with emphasis on experimental techniques;

- to identify kinetic limitations in her/his PhD (preliminary) workprogram and to propose a mini-project closely related to that workprogram;

- to select experimental techniques or other suitable methods for this mini-project;

- to establish suitable experimental conditions for the requirements of that mini-project;

- to improve skills for analysis and discussion of research results attained within that mini-project.

- to develop skills to write the corresponding research report, in the form of a scientific publication.

Syllabus

Solid State kinetics:

Role of defects and diffusion on solid state reactions

Thermodynamic constrains;

Size effects;

Solid state kinetics: isokinetic models for constant and variable T; reactions close to equilibrium.

Kinetics of processing:

Powder processing: high T and low T (mechanosynthesis, hydrothermal synthesis, etc.)

Sintering mechanisms and less common sintering methods

Phase transformations and glass crystallization

Frozen-in conditions under controlled thermochemical cycles

Thick and thin film processing

Degradation vs processing: interaction with gases, reactions in multilayer or composite systems, degradation by fast changes

Methods:

Thermoanalytical real time methods

Dilatometry, DTA, DSC, TG

Less common methods based on property changes (electrical, mechanical, electrochemical,…)

Post-morten analyses

Macroscospic changes (weight, volume)

Microscopy and stereology

XRD

Spectroscopies (IR, Mossbauer)
