Elective
2nd Cycle Studies - Mestrado
Recommended Prerequisites
Differential and Integral Calculus, Numerical Mathematics, Statistics and Programming.
Teaching Methods
Throughout the semester, students will receive a set of real problems involving mathematical models. Working groups, students will learn how to approach a real problem, how to break it down into manageable parts and how to set up a model that contains the key elements of the problem. Regularly, the course instructor responsible for the project, discuss the previous work and set new tasks. If possible, it should have the collaboration of an industrial partner.
The assessment takes the form of a short report for each topic that should include the theoretical basis of models used.
Learning Outcomes
It is intended that the student is able to apply, build or develop mathematical models in a creative way, in real applications. This objective is achieved, in group activities, through the analysis and resolution of specific problems related in particular to industrial issues.
This unit develops the following instrumental skills: modeling and analysis, scientific programming and simulation, knowledge of mathematical methods, use of mathematical models for industrial environments, ability to handle and analyze large amounts of data with numerical and statistical methods. On a personal level allows the development of individual initiative, ability to work in groups, research skills and independent learning, and, as a member of a team, oral and written communication skills with multi-disciplinary audiences.
Work Placement(s)
NoSyllabus
A set of problems/projects will be offered with analysis and resolution involving the use of mathematical models.
It is intended that students use knowledge in the areas of optimization, statistics, numerical analysis, scientific computing or other, to solve the problems.
The problems, mainly related to a real industrial situation, will be presented in language avoiding mathematical formalism and may also be suggested by industry professionals.
The interpretation of data, the formulation and analysis of an adequate mathematical model, its numerical simulation and validation, as well as the interpretation of results are thus some of the necessary phases.

Assessment Methods
Continuous Assessment
The course grading is based on the presentations, reports and class participation. There are no exams. Reports have a total weight varying between 60 and 80%, oral presentations have a total weight ranging between 10 and 30% and class participation vary between 10 and 20%.: 100.0%
Bibliography
Bibliografia diversa, dependendo dos temas distribuídos. Será, em geral, composta por artigos de investigação, livros científicos e relatórios de trabalho de empresas.
