Teaching Methods
The teaching methodology includes T, TP and PL classes.
In theoretical classes is taught the programme of the discipline, with the aid of notes in the form of photocopies and electronically, as well as audio-visual aids.
The aim of the TP classes, always with the active individual participation of the students, is to reinforce the students’ knowledge acquired in the theoretical lectures through problem solving.
The objectives of the laboratory practical classes are to illustrate the concepts shown in the theoretical lectures, and carry out volumetric and gravimetric analysis experiments.
Learning Outcomes
The objectives of the curricular unit are to learn the fundamentals of non-instrumental analytical chemistry, particularly in solutions, and its applications.
Competences to be developed are:
- Knowledge and capacity for comprehension: recognize and use theories and concepts, analyze and summarize information
- Application of knowledge and comprehension: apply concepts to solve problems, know how to undertake laboratory practical work
- Perform judgments / take decisions: process and interpret quantitative data
- Communication: understand and use information sources, transmit acquired knowledge adequately
- Self-learning competences: develop competences sufficiently to be autonomous, know how to evaluate self-performance.

Analytical chemistry methods: sensitivity, detection limit, accuracy and precision. Sampling and sample preparation. Scheme for qualitative analysis.
Formation of solutions; solvation. Ideal solutions; colligative properties; osmosis and dialysis. Conductivity, activity and concentration. Acids, bases and buffer solutions. Oxidation-reduction. Reactions in solution and volumetric analysis
Acid-base titrations: mono- and polyprotic systems, quantitative identification of mixtures; indicators.
Oxidation-reduction titrations: indicators, potentiometric titrations. Titrations involving complex formation: mono- and polydentate ligands; conditional constants. Titrations in non-aqueous media.
Precipitation reactions and gravimetric analysis; Sparingly soluble salt and solubility equilibria.
Formation of precipitates: nucleation, crystallization and aging. Co-precipitation, post-precipitation and solid solutions. Precipitation titrations.
Principles of thermogravimetry and electrogravimetry.
