Teaching Methods

The course is developed under a system of seminars given by several experts using the following methodologies:
- expository method, complemented by students bibliographic and Web inquiries
- possible use of blended learning models, supported by a Moodle like platform
- encouragement and participation in workshops, conferences and debates
- oral presentations by the students and continuous email support
- bibliography and other relevant contents will be provided online

Evaluation: A small research project within one of the course topics will culminate in an oral presentation at a public session and the delivery of a written report formatted as a paper. The submission of this work to a national or international journal is encouraged.

Learning Outcomes

This unit aims to:

- relate HoST with a scientific cultural education

- develop an understanding on the discursive functioning of science

- contribute to a scientific education in non-formal contexts

- reflect on the reception of scientific academic discourse by the public at large

- understand the differences between scientific and non-scientific knowledge

- focus on the preservation and organization of scientific material heritage and archives

 

Students are expected to:

- understand the discursive functioning of science in formal and non-formal contexts

- know how to present scientific arguments and subjects to lay public

- develop abilities on the use of HoST in scientific education

- enlarge competencies towards scientific heritage and its preservation

- develop skills in oral and written communication

- evaluate the complex dynamics of the epistemological and cultural factors contributing to changes in science
