Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course unit, the student will be able to: i) Know and understand the general mechanisms of drug action; ii) Know and understand the mechanisms of absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination of drugs; ii) understand the adverse reactions to drugs, drug interactions and toxicity of drugs; iii) To know the stages of drug development and evaluation of quality / safety / efficacy of medicines.

Drug / medicine and dosage forms.

The mechanisms of drug action: general principles, cellular and molecular aspects.

The general cycle of drugs in the body: Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism and Elimination.

Changes in the response due to genetic problems. The Pharmacogenetics.

Adverse reactions to drugs.

Drug interactions.

Toxicity of drugs and the importance of Pharmacotoxicology.

Phases of drug discovery and development.

The steps for assessing quality / safety / efficacy of medicines.
