Teaching Methods

Different teaching methods will be used in this course, including lectures, group work and short research tasks, which are intended to enable students not only to acquire knowledge, but especially to be placed in contact with the Portuguese language and culture.

Learning Outcomes

This course aims to enable students to understand the process of historical development of Portugal from the reign of Queen Mary I to the present. Students are also expected to deepen their understanding of Portuguese culture and identity and their evolution throughout time.

Introduction to the historical evolution of Portugal until the 18th century
1.Constitutional Monarchy and the First Republic(1820-1926)
1.The French invasion and its impact on the country(1807-1811).
2.The liberal Revolution of 1820.
3The Constitutional Monarchy – construction of the liberal regime,the absolutist response,the civil war and the consolidation of the regime (1820-1851).
4.The end of the monarchy and the founding of the Republic(1910).
5.Main characteristics and achievements of the First Republic.
6.Portuguese participation in the First World War.
2.From Dictatorship(1926-1974)to European Integration(1986)
1.The military coup of 28 May 1926.
2.Construction of the Estado Novo–ideological,economic and social framework of Salazar's dictatorship(1933-1974).
