Teaching Methods

Expository and interative methods, involving the students active participation in class discussions and practical exercises.

Students are also expected to prepare weekly written assignments at home.

Learning Outcomes

In line with the general objectives of the CEFR, at the end of the course students should be able to:

1. Understand the main points of complex and long speech; follow the main points of presentations, conferences and academic lectures, as well as radio and television programs;

2. Interact with native speakers; actively participate in a long conversation about matters of general interest; convey different degrees of emotion; express and defend opinions.

3. Speaking: present clear, detailed descriptions on a wide range of subjects; develop a clear and logical reasoning; explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options;

4. Reading:read texts on various topics; understand articles and reports on current issues; quickly understand the essential points of long and complex texts;

5. Writing: write detailed, clear texts on various subjects; write essays or reports developing an argument.

Activities and tasks of comprehension and production of spoken statements and written texts on the following topics (among others):

 

1. Thematic units and respective lexicon:

Professions

Cultural topics

2. Language Functioning:

In addition to the operationalization and use of the grammar topics covered in Structures of the Portuguese Language, the following aspects will be developed:

a) Lexical and phrasal semantics
• denotation, connotation
• idioms; proverbs
• specific vocabularies
• hyperonymy / hyponymy
• synonymy and polissemy

• deictic, deontic  and evaluative adverbs

 

b). Sociolinguistic and textual-pragmatic aspects

• forms of address in Portugal /in Brasil
• courtesy formulas
• various enunciative modalities

 

c) Mechanisms of textual cohesion and interpersonnal discourse markers

 

3. Textual typology:

narrative, dialogical, expository and argumentative
