Teaching Methods

This course will make use of a variety of texts related to the topics of the syllabus in order to address the structural aspects of the language. Students will carry out systematization exercises on all the grammatical/structural topics studied.

Learning Outcomes

This course aims to develop students’ spoken and written linguistic-communicative skills and also to promote reflection on the use of language, thus enabling them to understand and produce texts with some degree of complexity, in accordance with the objectives of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages for level B2.

 

At the end of the course, students should be able to:

1. Produce fluent and well structured speech appropriate to different communication situations;

2. Understand, interpret and produce different types of written texts;

3. Use a varied lexicon and master Portuguese grammar structures.

Syllabus

1. Thematic units and related lexicon:

Leisure

Professions

Current affairs. Cultural, social, economic topics.

2. Language functioning

a) Coordinating conjunctional structures: copulative, adversative, disjunctive and conclusive;

Subordinating conjunctional structures: causative, conditional, concessive, final, temporal and consecutive.

b) Syntax:

• Structure of simple sentences: nominal group, clitics, concordance

• Structure of complex sentences (and textual cohesion): causal, temporal, conditional, concessive, relative; passive constructions; direct and indirect speech; reduced sentences.

c) Lexical semantics (word formation, denotation, connotation, polysemy, idioms, specific vocabularies), phrasal semantics (modal and aspectual values) and cohesion

d) Textual cohesion: textual discourse markers.
