Learning Outcomes

The course’s main objectives are those defined for level B2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Specifically, this course aims to develop students’ skills in phonology and pronunciation, at the level of both understanding and performance, enabling them to establish relations between phonic and graphic units. Thus, at the end of the course, students should be able to:

a) Understand speech by a native speaker;

b) Correctly pronounce the sounds of Portuguese;

c) Interact with native speakers on familiar topics and activities in everyday situations;

d) Communicate with spontaneity and ease with native speakers;

e) Produce clear speech on a wide variety of topics;

f) Understand the main ideas of complex speech on both concrete and abstract topics;

g) Recognize the relationship between graphic and phonic units in complex utterances.

a. Vowel and consonant sounds in standard Portuguese (review);
b. 'Glides' and falling oral and nasal diphthongs (review);
c. Hiatuses and rising diphthongs (review);
d. Phoneme / grapheme correspondence;
e. The main stress in verbs and non verbs;
f. Reduction of unstressed vocalism;
g. Syntactic phonetics: sibilant consonants at the end of syllables;

h. Rules for placing graphic accents;
i. Phenomena of vowel alternation in nouns, adjectives and verbs;

j. Intonation: declarative, interrogative (with pronouns), imperative and exclamatory sentences.
