Teaching Methods

One of the weekly classes is dedicated to speaking and the other to writing activities. Classes will include various exercises on the vocabulary related to the topics of the syllabus, as well as to topics taught in Structures of the Portuguese Language.

Learning Outcomes

In line with the general objectives of the CEFR, at the end of the course students should be able to:

1. Understand the main points of complex and long speech on everyday subjects; follow the main points of lectures and presentations as well as radio and television programs;

2. Interact normally with native speakers; actively participate in a long conversation about matters of general interest; express and defend opinions; make a detailed description or presentation on various subjects;

4. Read texts on various topics; quickly understand the essential points of correspondence, articles or complex instructions within their areas of interest; identify the most relevant details of a long text;

5. Write detailed, clear texts on various subjects related to their interests, either developing an argument or not; summarize information.

1. Thematic units and respective lexicon:

Citizenship, current events, family and school

2. Language functioning:

In addition to the operationalization and use of the grammar topics covered in Structures of the Portuguese Language, the following aspects will be developed:

a) Phonetics, prosody and orthography

• grapheme-phoneme relationship
• intonational contrast between sentences

b) Lexical Semantics: denotation, connotation, polysemy; idioms and specific vocabulary

c) Sociolinguistic and textual-pragmatic aspects

• forms of address in Portugal

• personal, spatial and temporal deixis
• basic illocutionary acts and indirect speech acts

• metadiscursive interrogative structures

• requests for repetition, confirmation and clarification

• fixed formulas used in specific contexts
• language registers

• norms and dialects

d) Textual typology:

• descriptive, narrative, expository and epistolary texts and summaries
