Teaching Methods
• Theoretical explanation;
• Exercises for improving pronunciation and recognition of vowel sounds and consonantal sounds;
• Exercises to recognize the correspondence between sound and spelling;
• Exercises in pronunciation: hearing and repetition of words, phrases and short texts;
• Teacher-student and student-student interaction;
• Exercises for improving listening skills;
• Exercises for improving spontaneous production.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course students should be able to:
i) Pronounce in a comprehensible manner a limited repertoire of simple phrases and sentences;
ii) Establish relations between graphic and phonic units in very basic statements with which they are already familiar;
iii) Understand the main ideas and relevant information in short texts and messages on topics they already know;
iv) Read simple and short texts in a clear manner, even though at a slow pace;
v) Understand a very clear and carefully articulated speech;
vi) Interact in a basic manner provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is willing to help.

- Vowel and consonantal sounds in standard Portuguese;
- Relationship between phoneme and grapheme;
- The use of the International Phonetic Alphabet;
- Classes of vowel sounds;
- Classes of consonant sounds; voiced and voiceless consonants;
- 'Glides' and falling oral and nasal diphthongs;
- The main stress in verbs and non verbs;
- Rules for placing the accent mark;
Intonation: declarative, interrogative, imperative and exclamatory sentences.
