Teaching Methods
The classes start with the basic concepts and models, using the expository method. The calculation processes involved in some common models will also be presented, as well as the way of automating such calculations by resorting to computational tools. Students will then solve small problems, in order to gain a better understanding of the way these tolls may be applied.
For the advanced models, only the key ideas will be presented, allowing the students to achieve a deeper understanding of the models through individual work and also through a project.
For evaluation purposes, students will be able to choose between a final exam and a set of small problems and a project.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course unit, students should be able to
•understand the different phases of the project management process;
•understand the different ways of representing projects, and represent real projects;
•use basic scheduling methods;
•identify the different types of resources that may be required by a project;
•distinguish and apply different types of precedence relations;
•use models for project scheduling under uncertainty, and understand the impact of uncertainty;
•understand some advanced models for multi-mode and resource constrained project scheduling.

The purpose of this course is to provide a perspective on the field of project management, focusing on project scheduling. It starts by analyzing the different phases of the project management process. The representation of the projects and the basic scheduling methods will then be presented. We will then discuss the different objectives, precedence relations and types of resources that may arise in a project. The impact of uncertainty will also be discussed. Finally, some advanced models will be outlined, particularly multi-mode scheduling models and resource constrained scheduling models.
