Teaching Methods

Presentation by the teacher, in seminar mode, of the main problems of the program, with space for active discussion by students, based on previously selected bibliography and distributed by the students; Oral presentations by students on previously defined topics, followed by debate; Discussion of the written work projects and sharing the respective contents and problems with colleagues and teacher. According to this teaching methodology, continuous assessment will be privileged, in accordance with the evaluation requirements of the 2nd. cycle.

Learning Outcomes

Insert the main contemporary economic phenomena in their historical context of management and development. Sensitize students to "think historically" in the economy of the Contemporary Era and its social processes. Identify as the main stages and processes of formation of the contemporary world economy. Describe and interpret the processes of intensification of interregional economic relations in the last two and a half centuries. Identify and debate as mutations in the hierarchy of spaces since the dawn of the contemporary world economy, the complexity and the price of inequalities in the world.

I. Introduction: Economics and Contemporary Economic History - concepts, perspectives, problems.

II. Modern economic growth and the formation of the contemporary world economy: the industrial revolution in Britain as a cornerstone of modern economic growth;

III. The diffusion of industrialization and the emergence of capitalist economies (1815-1870);

IV. The second industrial revolution and the integration of world economies;

V. The world economy between wars and crises (1914-1945);

VI. The “golden age” of capitalism;

VII. The affirmation of global capitalism: the world economy between 1973 and the 21st century;

VIII. Capitalism between successes and failures: the price of inequalities and the challenges of liberal democracies.
