Teaching Methods

1. Oral presentations of contents (theoretical classes).

2. Presentation and training with testing materials, participation in scoring exercises and interpretation of results in small groups (practical classes). Analysis and discussion of protocols and clinical cases in the context of problem-oriented teaching (students use their knowledge about clinical conditions, brain structure and functioning, and correlate them with neuropsychological test results and imaging data).

3. e-learning (NONIO platform).

Learning Outcomes

Objectives:

1. To know the neuropsychological assessment process and protocols.

2. To know some of the main neuropsychological tests associated with examining different neurocognitive domains, with emphasis on instruments validated for the Portuguese population, including their potentialities and limits.

Learning outcomes:

1. Demonstrate competence in the administration, scoring and interpretation neuropsychological test results. 2. Demonstrate ability to articulate and communicate information obtained from the interview, clinical history and results in neuropsychological tests in the context of the elaboration of a neuropsychological report.

3. Understand the complexity of neuropsychological assessment work.

4. To know current research topics and assessment protocols in clinical, pediatric/educational, forensic and geriatric neuropsychological assessment.

Syllabus

1. Neuropsychological assessment (NPA). Basic library (books, periodicals, test publishers). History, principles, objectives, process.

2. Interview and clinical history.

3. Neuropsychological tests: administration, scoring, interpretation.

4. Neuropsychological tests and assessment domains: Memory (WMS-III, RAVLT), Attention (D2, Cancellation), Executive Functions (Tower of London, Stroop, TMT A/B, Semantic and Phonemic Verbal Fluency, WCST), Visual / Constructive Perception (RCFT-Copy), Language (Token Test), Motricity, Laterality, Orientation.

5. Coimbra Neuropsychological Assessment Battery (BANC, 15 tests). Uses in the examination of different clinical and educational conditions (Epilepsy, TBI, PHDA, ODD, Intellectual difficulties, DD).

6. Single case studies; association, dissociation and double dissociation studies; anatomy-clinical correlation methods.

7. Neuropsychological report.

8. NPA special issues  in pediatric/educational, clinical, forensic, geriatric settings.
