Teaching Methods

Lectures and seminars are organized to encourage students’ active involvement in learning, fostering student teacher interaction. Lectures will contextualize each topic and will be followed by the analysis and debate of the relevant texts (juridical and others) in the seminar classes.

Learning Outcomes

Overall learning objectives:

This curricular unit aims to provide basic skills of identification and analysis of the current juridical regulation of international relations.

 Specific objectives and competencies:

- Understanding the scope of principles of international law;

- Examining the tensions between international law and international politics and the problem of enforcement;

- Surveying theoretical approaches to legal scholarship.

 Generic competencies:

Development of analysis and synthesis skills, reading comprehension and oral expression.

Syllabus

The historical evolution of international law.

International Relations theories and international law.

Structures of interstate law: subjects, modes of elaboration and application.

The regulation of states’ coexistence: territorial and personal jurisdiction of the state.

Structural principles of the contemporary international juridical order: sovereignty, non-intervention, prohibition of the use of force.

Multilateralism and unilateralism.
