Recommended Prerequisites

It is recommended that students may have had prior approval on the curricular units of “Classical Sociological Thought” and “Great Currents of Sociology”, especially because there are connections between authors and currents that are recovered here. The demonstration of language skills (especially English) is also recommended.

Teaching Methods

This curricular unit aims to encourage the active participation of students in classes. The UC is organized in sessions conducted by the teacher.

Learning Outcomes

Overall objectives
This curricular unit aims to provide a systematic guide to some of the major theories and debates within sociology in the late 2oth and early 21st century. It explores as well ongoing post-disciplinary debates (in which sociology participates with other social and human sciences).

Specific objectives
 The main theories of the social, both within the disciplinary domain of sociology and at the boundaries of sociology with a range of other domains of knowledge, as part of diverse postdisciplinary configurations.

Generic competencies
Students are expected to engage with the main theoretical proposals within the discipline of sociology and with the postdisciplinary debates which are redrawing contemporary knowledge of the social.  

Specific competencies
Students are expected to develop capabilities for the identification of the main components of the various theoretical proposals and of their relevance for social research in the contemporary world

Diagnostics of the contemporary world: Europe in a time of crisis (W. Streek, P. Anderson, U. Beck). The changing world order and the  emergence of BRICS (G. Arrighi). Modernity/coloniality, post-coloniality, decoloniality (B. Sousa Santos, A. Quijano).
